2007 Supplement to Going in Circles
Year One of the Four Year Plan
Texts
The DK History of the World has been replaced by a new edition: The DK History of the World, Somerset Fry, New York, NY: DK Publishing, Inc., 2004, ISBN 0-7566-1244-6.
The new edition is virtually identical to the previous edition, and the page recommendations in Going in Circles are still applicable.
The Children’s Atlas of Civilizations and The Atlas of Ancient Worlds are both out of print. We recommend The Usborne Internet-Linked Ancient World, ISBN 978-0-79450-816-6 and The Usborne Internet-Linked Medieval World, ISBN 978-0-79450-815-9. A page assignment guide is included in this supplement.
MOMNOTES for English Foundations is now available. We highly recommend this resource for English instruction. MOMNOTES are 11 x 17 in. posters with outlines that summarize the discussion resources recommended in each English unit. The posters can act as a script for mom and an easy reference for children. MOMNOTES are available through our web site, www.kindredlearning.com.
Reading List
At this time, all of these books appear to be readily available. If you have difficulty finding one, please let us know.
Videos
Unit 2
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas – from Dreamworks, is a fun new version of Sinbad that contains mythological creatures but has little resemblance to Arabian Nights.
Unit 5
Spartacus – We no longer recommend Spartacus. It is rated PG-13 because later editions restored some offensive previously-deleted scenes.
Unit 6
Dragonheart (not Dragon Heart) – Very pagan but fun
DK Computer program – Castle (new version available)
Unit 8
The Princess and the Pea (not The Princess on a Pea)
Unit 9
Sea Hawk (not Sea Wolf) – oops!
Scout Merit Badges
Composite Materials – A new merit badge related to chemistry. Recommended for Unit 6.
Miscellaneous Books and Resources
History Unit 1
The Book of Mormon: Jacob Through the Words of Mormon is out of print. It is available used, but it is expensive. This is not a required resource.
English Unit 5
Once Upon a Time is a tell-a-story game now available from our web site.
English Unit 6
Marguerite Makes a Book (Robertson) is a beautiful book that goes well with calligraphy.
Resource Suppliers
See our web site at www.kindredlearning.com for texts, kits, lab supplies, and hard-to-find resources. Kindred Learning is currently located at 150 E Broadhollow Dr., Woodland Hills, UT 84653. 801-423-2556.
Latter-day Family Resources is now called Love to Learn (Salem, UT)
The Chem Shop (Centerville, UT) has closed its website and retail location in Salt Lake City, UT.
Mindware no longer supplies wooden mosaic tiles. See our website instead.
Typos and Booboos
Content mistakes: the only bad one we have found is the reference to John Jacobs, author of English fairy tales (English Unit 8 and MOMNOTES for English Foundations Unit 8). His name is Joseph Jacobs. (I think I must have been humming, “John Jacob Jingle Heimer Schmidt.”
Chemistry Unit 1, Week 3, Lab 6 – The periodic table has been updated to include element 118, ununoctium. Scientists have recorded a grand total of 3 atoms of this element (1 produced in 2002 and 2 more in 2005)!
Chemistry Unit 3, Week 1, Lab 4 – Copper sulfate has 4 parts oxygen (not 4 parts hydrogen).
Instructions: okay, some of the instructions need pictures...
Sistrums are quite involved, so we simplified a little. The instructions on page 23 match the picture that is on page 62.
King Tut’s headdress on page 27 is shown on page 162.
An Ashanti headdress from page 30 is shown on page 66.
Basket reed from History Unit 2 can be held in place by clothespins, as well as paper clips.
The creature collages from English Unit 1 work best by gluing nature items onto Styrofoam meat trays.
The appendix pattern for the cone hat from English Unit 6 must be doubled by placing the broken line on a fold to produce a piece that is approximately one quarter of a circle
Punctuation problems: fortunately, each school year teaches me as much or more than the children.
Commas and periods are supposed to go inside quotation marks.
Colons are no longer followed by two spaces.
Computers can produce a whole range of dash sizes, and I chose the wrong one!
Book titles are now presented in italics instead of being underlined.
Spelling mistakes, too? Bummer!
“Gypsey” should be “gypsy.”
“Halfs” should be “halves.” (Yes, I am embarrassed over that one.)

Alternate Texts Reading Lists
These two Usborne books work well together to cover ancient history for younger children. We like the clear text and the addition of real photographs to the drawings.
(The Usborne Book of World History also does a good job of covering the same time period, but the pictures are all drawings, and many of them include nudity that is distracting and unnecessary.)
