Wooden Splints (package of 50). Splints are thin wooden sticks used to test for the presence of hydrogen, oxygen, or carbon dioxide in experiments. For the glowing splint test to work well, the wooden splint must be allowed to burn long enough for at least a centimeter of the wood to become a glowing ember.enough for at least a centimeter (about 3/8 inch) of the wood to become a glowing ember when the flame is blown out. If the glowing splint produces a popping sound, it indicates the presence of hydrogen as it ignites the gas. If the glowing splint bursts into flame and burns brightly, it indicates the presence of oxygen. If the glowing splint immediately goes out, it indicates the presence of carbon dioxide. Wooden splints measure about 5 3/8 x 3/16 x 1/32 inch in size. 50 per package.
